Stepping into a local farm that looked different from the ones back home reminded the Celebrate Church Impact team that meaningful service often starts by simply listening to someone’s story. Clearing away overgrowth left them tired, but thankful for the reminder that while we set out to impact others, God often uses those moments to grow us.
Greetings from another sunny day in Abaco,
Today, after our delicious breakfast at camp, we took breakfast to the teachers at CAPS (Central Abaco Primary School) to enjoy as they wrap up their school year. The students’ last day was yesterday, but the 6th graders were at the school to practice for their graduation ceremony. To our surprise and theirs, we had enough to serve many of the 6th graders some breakfast as well. Several people from our team were able to play some ultimate frisbee with them.
We then all gathered in the room where the demolition took place yesterday to pray over it, that God would bless it and all that it would provide for the students. Two of the young students, Samuel and Shiloh (twin brothers), wanted to join us in prayer and then chose to have us all sing “The Lord’s Army” and “I’ve Got the Joy, Joy, Joy”. It was beautiful and uplifting!
Our next adventure was to Alicia Reckley’s farm. Coming from a state that has many farms, it definitely wasn’t what we expected. What we saw was a lot of overgrowth of trees, brush, weeds, and grass with a shack and a run-down camper. After speaking with her about what she hoped we could help out with, we all went to work clearing out the unwanted growth, including the poison wood, by hand. We also had a few team members using a skid steer on areas to be totally cleared. We all spent time with Alicia, hearing her story and the need for our help, and felt compassion for her situation. Many prayed with her and allowed her to share her vision for her farm, providing a better income for her and her children. She was truly grateful and amazed by all that we accomplished. And we were exhausted but full of joy that God gave us the opportunity to serve her in this way.
After a hard day’s work, we were ready for a treat, so back to the ice cream parlor before returning to camp. That left us enough time to enjoy the ocean before devotions, dinner, and spending time reflecting on our day!
We thank God for the opportunities we had to impact others today, but even more so the impact it had on us.
