Cold Water and a Pack of Peanuts

If you watch the news, you might think Haiti is a lost cause. The headlines out of Port-au-Prince describe a place that feels like “hell on earth”. It is chaotic, violent, and devastating.

But that is not the whole story. Miles away from those headlines, in the Central Plateau, a different reality is unfolding. It is a place our missionary Christi Gabhart calls a “paradise of poverty”. Here, amidst staggering need, we are seeing what happens when you stop trying to fix everything and simply choose to walk alongside people.

Right now, gang activity has pushed several thousand displaced people into the Pignon area. Many arrived with nothing but the clothes they were wearing, or as the locals say, “only the skin on their back”. The local Haitian Christians are not panicking. They are opening their homes and sharing what little food they have.

Our response at Many Hands is to accompany them. In Creole, the word is akadremen. It means building a framework. We do not just hand out quick fixes. We provide the seeds, the training, and the safe spaces so local families can do the hard work of providing for themselves.

They prayed together, acknowledging that while they did not have the answers, God has a plan. When that father left, he had a new spring in his step. He turned back and said, “I don’t know. I just feel happy”.
