“When Helping Hurts” – Read Chapters 10, 11, A Final Word, and Appendix

Reflection Journal Question

1) Think of an individual(s) who have had a significant, positive influence on your life. How did they do this? What did you appreciate about their approach?

2) Think of how you or those around you obtained their jobs. What role did their social networks play in getting their job? How could you use your networks to help materially poor people?

3) Are there people in your life whom you have been trying to help who are simply not open to change? Stop and pray that the Holy Spirit would touch their hearts so they would be open to positive change.

Discussion Questions

1) Have your church, your ministry, or you as an individual ever, perhaps unknowingly, brought the “Donald Trump Effectt” into play in your partnerships? Is so, what can you do to reverse this problem?

2) What are the concepts from this reading material that have jumped out at you the most? What is something God has revealed to you in this book?

3) Where is the spirit leading your heart as you prepare to move to Haiti?

Prayer

Ask the Lord to plant deep seeds in your heart for working with individuals and communities without creating dependency. Pray for God to equip you as you prepare to move to Haiti. Pray for God’s preparing the soil to have conversation, seek community involvement, and seek God’s leading.
