1 Story of Impact
Building a school in Haiti in 2004 felt like one of the most incredible things I could do. It wasn’t. It was, in fact, one of the most disappointing experiences of my life. The excitement of getting to see the school for the first time, as we trudged through a river in the rain, slip-sliding all the way on the dirt road, quickly faded when we got there and saw it shoddily built, half-finished, and a shadow of the promise. Yet, without that initial failure, I wouldn’t have learned the difficult realities of international partnerships. That experience ignited a passion within me for fiscal responsibility and accountability in mission work. It spurred me to envision a better way, ultimately leading me to write a white paper that became the foundation for Many Hands. And, crucially, it paved the way for the School of Light, our incredible school built between 2016 and 2025. Our personal growth is directly proportional to the risks we take and the courage we muster. We learn through the process, especially during hard times. If you’re currently facing a situation that hasn’t lived up to your expectations, don’t lose heart. With persistence, time, and perspective, everything eventually works for our good—sometimes on this side of heaven and sometimes on the other. I’ve learned to trust the process because I trust the Author of the story.
