Catch up with our two IMPACT teams in this special edition of our reflection blogs! Members from the St. Mary’s Church and Haven Church IMPACT teams spent a fun day at Driftwood Farms in Abaco, learning about the innovative techniques of hydroponics and aquaponics farming. The group wrapped up their day at Growing Groups, a local youth group. Hear more about the day from Becky, Janet, Jenaye, and Lissa!

Haven IMPACT team– Becky and Janet:

Today we went to Driftwood Farms, owned by Tracy and Glen Kelly, which is a hydroponic organic farm that has a partnership with Many Hands.  We learned about the hydroponic process of growing vegetables and the aquaponics process of raising fish in a water table pond.  We assisted in harvesting vegetables and eggs, and enjoyed a delicious lunch with fresh produce from the farm.

After working on the farm all day, we returned to Camp Abaco and swam in the beautiful ocean, found sand dollars, and enjoyed fellowship with our team and the Haven Church IMPACT team members. Our evening was spent at G2, a local youth group, playing games and sharing our faith with the local youth.

Our ride back to camp was filled with songs and laughter.  At the end of our day we were blessed with a beautiful clear night sky where the stars were endless and radiant. We feel God’s presence here in Abaco.

St. Mary’s IMPACT team– Jenaye and Lissa:

Most of our day was spent at Driftwood Farms today. Driftwood is a hydroponics and aquaponic farm, owned by Glen and Tracy Kelly, who Many Hands partners with.  As a group, we experienced collecting/harvesting fruits and vegetables together, went for a stroll, and saw the chicken tractors (chicken jail) (birds in cages that are on wheels). Duran, a worker on the farm, showed us how the irrigation systems work amongst all of the harvest. We repotted “soil”, which was actually coconut husk and dried rice. We sliced and diced veggies on the real real. We met a pig/boar named Eggburt and he loved eating scraps– Eggburt isn’t picky.

Towards the end of the day, we had friends and fellowship at G2, Growth Groups, which was a chance for us to meet some of the local youth. We had the chance to play games, volleyball, and have snacks! During volleyball, Dave was spiked on multiple times. Pull it together Dave.

Anyways, G2 was full of learning about Colossians 3:18-22 and Colossians 4:1, talking about how to keep a balance in your relationship as husband and wife, as a master and a slave, and as parents and children, and how that all connects to obeying God as a Christian.

I think people come here seeing everything differently, but in the end humans are so similar even in the midst of tragedy, looking for connection with others and God as much as possible.
