Something Bigger

3  Points to Ponder

  1. “Long-term isolation makes us vulnerable. It has the power to break us. Is your current life-pattern developed around creating isolation or supportive relationships?”
  2. “When Lewis and Clark charted a new world, they didn’t do this by sheer will. They found rivers and streams to travel on, animal paths to follow, and Native Americans to guide their way. They had support systems to make them successful. Who and what is your support system?”
  3. “Even though many individual branches exist in a tree, they are all connected back to one root. This is what ties us together, as it is bigger and stronger than any one of the branches. How connected to your root are you right now?”

“What can you do to promote world peace? Go home and love your family.” -Mother Teresa

“In truth a family is what you make it. It is made strong, not by number of heads counted at the dinner table, but by the rituals you help family members create, by the memories you share, by the commitment of time, caring, and love you show to one another, and by the hopes for the future you have as individuals and as a unit.” -Marge Kennedy

1 Story of Impact

I recently heard on the radio a survey result that has stuck with me for over a week. People were asked, “For Thanksgiving, if you were given the option of going home to be with your family or $1,000 and not seeing your family, which one would you choose?” Only 19% said to be with their family. They did this same survey 20 years ago and 44% said be with their family. This made me incredibly sad, as only 1 in 5 would choose time with family over money. Families can be complicated, I get it, but at the root, I believe all desire to be loved by their families. It is the first social connection we have… or don’t have. When this is broken, the foundation for life is much more difficult. Not impossible, but harder. We don’t get to choose our family situation, as we are born into it, but we can guide how the branch grows after us. How do you want your branch to grow in the generations coming after you? Once you get that picture in your mind, what are your daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly choices making this possible?
