1 Story of Impact
My mom texted me before Memorial Day weekend, asking if I would go with her to the cemetery to put some flowers on Dad’s gravesite. It has been almost six months since Dad left this world, and I haven’t been to his gravesite since the day we buried him. Obviously, I said yes, as Mom wanted the support and it is something I have been wanting to do for some time. As I walked up, I was surprised there was still dirt, not grass, on the site. It makes sense, as spring is barely upon us, but I just didn’t picture it this way in my mind. The freshness and surreal reality of Dad no longer with us slapped me across the face. At the same time, as painful as the hurt is that Dad is no longer with us, it is good for me to remember his life. He would have loved that we took the time to visit him. It would have made him so happy that Mom purchased red geraniums, his favorite flower, and laid them on his grave. Once I get over the hurt, I remember all the good things about his life and what he meant to Mom, myself, and our family. All of us have experienced hurt at some point in our life. If we stay at the hurt, it continues to cloud all the other good things in our lives. As people of impact, there is a time to walk through the hurt and see to the other side. To remember the good things before the hurt. To be present to experience life after the hurt. I’m not saying any of this is easy, but it is freeing when the time is right. As you think about your past hurts, what are you still holding on to that is blinding your vision to both the past and present? Is it time to walk through it and let go?
