Pherden’s Story

Making Changes Through The Miniens Conference

“We need to find ways to help together and do what needs to be done.”

[dropcap]P[/dropcap]herden Accilien is an essential member of his community in Haiti. He is married, a father to six children, a pastor, and a leader who wants to help the community progress. Many people there are farmers, and they plant manioc, corn, beans, pearl millet, and sugar cane in order to find work. The community faces many challenges, such as: lack of resources, children not able to attend school, and little attention from the Haitian government. Pherden believes the community needs to work together to overcome these challenges.“We need to find ways to help together and do what needs to be done.”  The Servant-Hearted Leadership Conference has been instrumental in helping Pherden’s community. He feels that the conference has brought a social and spiritual change to the community. The attendees have gained knowledge, learned to trust each other, and realized the importance of staying united. Personally, Pherden learned to put the needs of others before his own. Because I am a part of the community, if something is not working well in the community, it affects me. And if everything is working well, then I will feel better too. I also learned in the Conference that other people’s needs go before mine. When we put the community first, then they will see us and help us.”  The conference has had many different benefits, including a gift of 1,200 Gourdes (roughly $17.56). The money was to be used for the expansion of God’s Kingdom, so they decided to start a little gas business, invest in other activities, and use the profit to send children to school. In the community, people sell half a gallon of gasoline for the price of a full gallon. With the money and knowledge they gained from the conference, they decided to change the system. Additionally, they received five goats to distribute throughout the community. “Many Hands came as an example for other Organizations. They have not come to work against us, but have come to work alongside us to make changes in the community. Many Hands trusts us to help the community on our own. I feel like we can achieve even more things with Many Hands.”  Through the conference, Pherden has gained a deep understanding of the Bible, and it has given him knowledge that he can share with others, especially those in his church. “It also teaches us how to be united and to work together. This way we build trust among us, so we can do greater things. This is what the conference taught us.”
