The second day of the Des Moines Christian School trip was spent noticing and admiring God’s beauty found within Abaco and during fellowship with others.
Today we arose with the most excited faces as we would venture out on our culture day! This excitement was fueled by Laura telling us what we were going to be doing for the day. As we finished our pancakes and sausages we left with joy and readiness to see God’s beauty. Our first stop about 30 minutes away was a blue hole. This hole is connected to the ocean despite being pretty far inland. As we drove to the blue hole we saw the tree line drastically change from snapped trunks to flourishing Abaco Pine. This just showed us a small glimpse again of how drastic of a hurricane Dorian was in 2019. When we arrived in the woods, we took a small walk and suddenly, the blue hole was right in front of us! We jumped in with excitement and soaked all of the beauty that God created around us. We took some photos, laughter was shared, Jaxson learned how to tread water, Aaron, Jon, and Scott had a belly flop contest, and we dried off after a couple of hours.
We then took off to our beautiful lunch spot called Pete’s Pub. This place was filled with tourists and not a lot of locals. We ordered our food and had a blast swimming in the ocean while we waited a while for our food. They ended up forgetting our order but we still had fun! Finally, our food came which consisted of mahi, chicken, shrimp tacos, and the less adventurous had hamburgers. We finished our tasty meal and headed off to our last location.
Despite a lot of people being burnt, we hit our last beach for the day, which may have been the best. This beach was the most beautiful thing. The evidence of God’s hands was evident from the pink sand to the rocks far out. Everyone was amazed. We had an hour to swim around and enjoy ourselves. We played volleyball, chicken, and mermaids.
Our fellowship exponentially grew throughout the day as we spent time with one another. As we headed back to Camp Abaco we reminisced about the day and talked about all the fun times with one another. Although many of us were burnt and tired, we were all so happy to be in Abaco serving the Bahamian people in whatever we could. We are all in for God and want to serve in open arms to anyone who needs it. We thank God for this amazing trip we are privileged to be on and as some say “many hands make light work”.
