1 Story of Impact
On December 18, 2021, twenty nervous-yet-excited Haitian couples made their vows before God to love each other till death do them part.
To get to this day, the road was extremely difficult. In July, their President was assassinated, and the true killers are still unknown. A massive earthquake rocked the country, followed by a hurricane. Due to years of instability, gangs controlled vast sections of the country, in particular the areas ships brought in needed imports of basic necessities for an island nation. Inflation skyrocketed on basic goods. Hospitals and schools couldn’t function because of a gas shortage. For those in the rural areas already suffering, life got worse. Yet, through all these trials, these couples remained committed to each other to be married. They showed up for pre-marriage counseling sessions and made the journey repeatedly to our campus for dress and suit fittings. One couple was in a motorcycle accident on the way to the ceremony, went to the hospital, and still made it to the ceremony. Commitment is a choice we all make on a daily basis. It isn’t magic, rather it is the diligence to stay true to the person you desire to be. Even when things are hard, you choose to not give up on yourself and others. And if our Haitian brothers and sisters can make this type of commitment in the middle of all their trials, what excuse do we have to break our commitment?
